KET Showing of "Art of Recovery", a 30 minute documentary directed by Joanna Hay

Art of Recovery tells of a Kentucky community’s efforts to combat the devastation of the opioid epidemic and drug addiction through arts-centered programs.  Once a week, as part of their drug court requirements, a group of women gather with local artists to explore their sobriety and recovery through writing, drama, visual art and music.  Led by artist Doris Thurber, whose daughter died of a heroin overdose in 2015, the women explore new tools for self-expression and healing in a supportive environment.

Art of Recovery will be aired through July 26th. Click here for the KET schedule.

Speed Art Museum Screening of "Art of Recovery" Followed by Q&A

Art of Recovery tells of a Kentucky community’s efforts to combat the devastation of the opioid epidemic and drug addiction through arts-centered programs.  Once a week, as part of their drug court requirements, a group of women gather with local artists to explore their sobriety and recovery through writing, drama, visual art and music.  Led by artist Doris Thurber, whose daughter died of a heroin overdose in 2015, the women explore new tools for self-expression and healing in a supportive environment.

The Speed Cinema event also features Hay’s sound installation If Nothing Changes, Nothing Changes, which will play in the museum’s cinema lobby throughout the afternoon beginning at noon.  In the piece, Hay has woven the voices of the women involved in the project with the mournful strain of her violin. The repetition of phrases and the drone of the music suggest the patterns of relapse and the generational impact of addiction.
